The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has pruned the auction register of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to 405 from 991 but only the first 86 players will certainly be called for auction. The rest will be part of the accelerated process that will commence from player No 87.
In a communique to the franchises on Tuesday (December 13) evening the BCCI said, "For your planning purposes please note, subject to timings it is envisaged that the accelerated process will start after player No.86. The first accelerated process will cover all the players from 87 - 405.
"Franchises will be asked to nominate a set number of players from this group. Once these players (87-405) have been presented, franchises will be requested to submit the names of players (unpresented/unsold) from all those on the full list of 405 for further accelerated process. This will be covered in more detail at the auction briefing on 22nd December 2022." The auction, to be held in Kochi on December 23, will commence at 2.30 PM.
he BCCI further said, "The player auction will commence with the full round of Capped players by specialism - Batsmen, All-rounders, Wicket-Keeper/Batsmen, Fast Bowlers and Spin Bowlers and then move into a full specialism round of Uncapped players."
Out of 405 players, 273 are Indians and 132 are overseas players of which four are from the associate nations. The total capped players are 119, uncapped players are 282 and four from the associate nations.
The BCCI is yet to formally inform the franchises about the availability of the players, a decisive element for the auction. With the Ashes series starting in mid-June and the England team also involved in a Test against Ireland from June 1, the players from England and Australia may skip the business end of the tournament.
"The availability details of the overseas players along with the update on the players who have been reported or banned for suspect bowling action will be sent in due course," the BCCI mail says.
A maximum of 87 slots, with up to 30 overseas slots, can be filled during the auction, with Sunrisers Hyderabad (13), Kolkata Knight Riders (11) and Lucknow Super Giants (10) having the most slots. The combined purse of the 10 franchises is 206.5 crore which can be transacted at the auction.
As per the curtailed list, there are now 19 players at the top base price of INR 2 Crore, which includes all-rounders Ben Stokes, Sam Curran and Cameron Green. There are 11 players in the INR 1.5 Crore bracket including Harry Brook, Adam Zampa and Jason Roy. Twenty cricketers are part of the INR 1 Crore bracket, including England's Joe Root, and Indian players like Mayank Agarwal and Manish Pandey.
